Enjoy putting on this soft, cozy pullover sweater from Peruvian artisan Nestor Yana. Made from a blend of acrylic and alpaca wool, the lightweight navy sweater has a comfortable cowl neck and three-quarter length sleeves.
Nestor's mother is from Juliaca in the Peruvian altiplano. She taught Nestor to weave and he in turn has taught his wife, his two children and his assistants. He finds his inspiration in traditional Peruvian art and constantly searches art and history books to refine his craft.
Nestor is not only an employer, he is an important member of his community. He continues to grow his workshop, providing full-time employment to many people and part-time employment to others when he can. He recognizes his good fortune and shares with those less fortunate whenever the opportunity arises. The income from Nestor's Novica sales not only supports his wife, son and elderly parents - it helps to support others in his community. Many of Nestor's employees were homeless. Nestor not only provides them with work, he provides a place to stay or live.
Nestor loves his community and does what he can to help it. He employs disabled elderly craftswomen to create the unique hand finishes applied to his designs. These women would be unable to care for themselves without the support Nestor gives them.
Nestor was recently diagnosed with a calcaneal bone spur, a condition that is often brought about by repetitive motion. He has been forced to modify his daily routine at the workshop.
Nestor's persistence and determination have paid off. He not only is able to support himself but has grown his workshop and now offers work to others.
Nestor pays for his son to attend the university and employs other artisans who pay for their own children's education.
Nestor still provides for his son who is in the university.
This is a very pretty sweater. As the photo shows, you do need a camisole underneath. I'm an XL and ordered the L/XL size--the fit is generous, but not sloppy. The arms are slightly bat-wing, which is a flattering cut for this type of knit. My torso is long and this sweater covers everything to the upper thigh. As I did with another Peruvian sweater I ordered, I washed this in liquid castile soap, rinsed, and let soak in a strong vinegar solution before rinsing again. Some dye did come out in the wash but the vinegar set the dye. I suspect this is a manufacturing challenge to do with the alpaca wool (my other sweater bled more, and has 4X the alpaca content). Not a problem--I wash new clothes before wearing them anyway.

I really like this sweater. The cut is flattering. I can wear it with a skirt to the office or with jeans at home. Yes, you do need a camisole underneath it. I washed it in the machine with cold water and laid it flat to dry. That works perfectly, no need to hand wash. I did add some vinegar for the first wash, but none after that. I would love to have another one in gray, but my size is not available!
