Details

Vacant eyes and a toothy grin are adorned with birds and flowers, while stars twinkle on the bony curves. Eufrosia Pantaleon creates a whimsical calavera (skull). The Mexican concept of the calavera mocks the spectre of death with a colorful celebration of life. Crafted of ceramic, the piece is hand-painted in festive colors.

Your Purchase Makes a Difference!

Eufrosia has confronted adversity and hardship, but has still caused her strength to overcome every obstacle and continues to pursue her ceramic art with NOVICA.

Eufrosia uses traditional techniques taught by elder members of the Nahua community where she was born. The colorful style dates from the 1950s, but the ceramic tradition has its roots in pre-Hispanic times. The artisan passes down her knowledge to her children who will continue creating handicrafts of culturally significance.

Eufrosia's ceramics have become very popular. Sales with Novica have been so good that she is able to pay three neighbors in her Nahua community to assist her in painting them.

Eufrosia Pantaleon has received 3 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $600 and the most recent for $1500.

The Women's Empowerment badge is awarded to female artisans or artisan groups that are led by women.

Eufrosia encourages and supports a young mother who struggles from a hearing and speech disability.

Every purchase from this artist has a profound impact on their livelihood and income.

Eufrosia is a very dedicated young mother who has six children under ten years old.

I received the wall hanging ""Blossoming Eclipse"" today. It's beautiful. The fine detail of the painting is amazing, the craftsmanship is wonderful. The place I picked out for it is high on the wall, but I think I'm going to have to take it down once in a while, to admire the detailed work up close.
